The largest pointed cabbage festival in the world happens every third weekend of October just minutes from Stuttgart in Leinfelden-Echterdingen. The central event is a contest for the best Filderkraut, a unique pointed white cabbage variety which only grows on the Filder Plateau. It has been listed as an endangered species in the “Ark of Taste” by the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity. The vegetable entries are adorned, weighed, measured, and paraded through the streets in an effort to take home the title of “world champion cabbage.”
More than 50,000 visitors attend each year, attracted by the wonderful program and delicious cabbage specialties – while you may think first of sauerkraut, you’ll be astounded at the many tasty forms this vegetable can take! Live music performances span a variety of genres on stages throughout the town. For the last 40 years, the festival has been entirely locally organized and operated by numerous clubs and their many volunteers, which makes this a truly authentic regional experience.
