Markthalle – Stuttgart Indoor Market
The Markthalle, Stuttgart’s beloved indoor market, unites dozens of purveyors of fine goods under one roof. The vendors’ offerings stand out for their high quality, freshness, and variety. You can do your weekly shopping or wander through for a treat: choose from beautiful produce, imported cheeses, fresh meat, bread and pastries, international spices, and delicacies from multiple countries. There are also in-house dining options and shops with home goods, cosmetics, and accessories.
The Art Nouveau building, designed by the architect Martin Elsässer, was completed in 1914 on a site that had housed other indoor and outdoor markets going back to the 14th century. There is a vaulted open area in the center of the hall under a glass roof. The ground floor hosts vendors in rows of stalls with narrow aisles between. There are arcades on either side, and on the second floor are additional shops, as well as walkways where visitors can over look the market hall. The third floor, which is not open to the public, houses offices.
