Heidelberg

Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a picturesque historic place as well as a lively university town. It has been a popular tourist destination for more than 200 years – Mark Twain even wrote about his visit! The castle still towers over the town majestically, despite being in ruin for more than 300 years.

The old town of Heidelberg is a maze of small streets and secluded courtyards, with charming churches and museums to visit. There’s a wealth of options when it comes to dining, shopping, and evening entertainment. It’s also the home of the oldest university in Germany, the University Ruperto Carola. It is a sight worth seeing, even as it now serves 300,000 students. At only 120 km (75 mi) from Stuttgart, it is certainly possible to make the trip there and back in a single day, but there’s far more to see than you can manage in a day trip.
